There are two teachers for all the children in the community. Once they reach age fourteen they must go to Sushifindi, the nearest town, to continue their education. When I was at Remolinos Grandes there was only one teacher for about fifteen students of varying ages and skill levels. I taught English to all age groups. Unfortunately, their only exposure is sporadic instruction from volunteers. When the children go to Sushifindi they lag behind their peers who have studied English consistently. The school is sorely undersupplied, the students need paper, pens and books.
I helped plant cacao seedlings donated to the community by the Cuyabeno municipality. The Secoya pursue agricultural projects together, dividing the tasks among community members and sharing the profits. The trees take three years to mature and months to harvest the raw cacao, the community plants to sell it to be made into chocolate.
The role of the shaman has decreased in recent years and most Secoya only come to him as a last resort. The Shaman at Remolinos Grandes works with several local plants Yoco is mashed into a liquid and drank like coffee to cure colds, and yaja a hallucinogen that provokes visions in the sick. The yaja is given so that the ill person can see visions in the jungle of their cure.
The Remolinos Grandes women’s associations meets each Sunday to discuss economic opportunities for the community. The cacao project was their main focus, and they are also working to develop better agriculture. They would like to raise more chickens, but to do that they need fencing to protect from predators. The polluted river has resulted in very few fish, so they are thinking of alternatives such as constructing pools at each home so they can cultivate fish, but they need the raw materials to build them.
While they continue to pursue agricultural projects, the main focus is on developing infrastructure for ecotourism in order to both sustain their traditional way of life and protect their already damaged home. A bird watching tower and Secoya Cultural Center and website, secoyasecuador.com, already exist, and they are continuing to work to promote ecotourim in the community.
